Default Should I go 408 0r 418????

Is there anything wrong with doing the bigger crank and stroking to a 418? I thought the bigger the stroke the better.

Also I bought the F13 cam thinking I wasnt going to stroke the 6.0L,should I change?

Thanks,Steve

All I know is that I'd definately have something larger than an F13 on a 400+ cube engine.

yeah, you'll want a larger cam.
as for CI, I'd say go with the 408, many people run this setup.

Futral made MAD power with the 418. The bigger stroke won't hurt anything. There is no such thing as too many cubic inches. If price isn't of any concern, I'd go bigger.

Price is almost exactly the same.
You could go real crazy and do a 4.125 stroke with a 4.060 bore.
What is that a 422?

And yes you will defentially benifit from a Larger Cam.

4.060 bore x 4.125 stroke = 427ci

There you go.
A non sleeved 427.
I guess I could have ran the calculator on that but I got lazy.

An f-13 in a 400+ cube motor will probably act like a stock cam in a 346.

Yeah, a 427 stroker for the same price of a 408...

I wonder if there are many of them running around here. I don't remember seeing one on LS1Tech.com.

Now that I have had a minute to think about it there was a member on here with this setup.
His car was for sale a few month back.
I think MTI might have built the motor.
I cant remember who it was but I am sure it was a member on this site.

I think that is more like a truck motor. Stroke higher than the bore would cause your hp to peak early, but you would have monstrous tq. To me that is not much of a race car. You would need a HUGE cam to offset the hp peaking earlier. I like my combo. Revs just like a big cammed 346ci.

I totally agree Vince.
I would much rather have the larger bore then the larger stroke.
I was just giving some other idea's.
I have a similar combo as you using a 4.040 bore and 4" stroke which equalls 410 cubic inches.
Stage 3 TEA heads on the way. My cam is smaller as I am only running a 242/246 duration camshaft.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.... I spoke with Allen at Futral today. He said he is not a fan of the longer stroke 418. He liked the bigger bore 418 sleeved but said the longer stroke was harded to get right (not quoting him though)......but I will go with a 408 and a 243/246 112* cam.

Good choice - don't want to go to crazy with the CAM. The 408 will be plenty enough!
