I am new to performance engines and was reading a thread further down and just wanted to know what exactly is piston slap and is it bad and how can you tell if you have it or not?

It's a loud clattery/knock sound usually worse at cold startup and usually gets better or goes away completely after the engine is warm. It's caused by loose piston fitment in the cylinder bore. The piston skirt is actually "slapping" the sides of the cylinder bore because it's a hair too loose in the bore.
I have a 95 Grand Prix 3.1 w/145k miles and it has made this noise since almost day one. It doesn't affect performance in anyway it's just an ugly noise.
