Default What kind of cam?

I have a 2002 Z28 with a whisper lid, flowmaster exhaust and just ordered 3.73s. I am now looking at a cam swap. I'm not real smart when it comes to cams. I want something with a choppy, rough idle; something i can hear and feel. The only catch is i am in college right now so i need something on a budget. I'm open for any advice. Please help!

Look at the last sicky titled "cam guide" and then go to LS1howto.com and look at the cam install guide because he has alot of great info in there. I'm in college too and I'm going with a 224/224 or a 228/228. It sounds like you want something a little bigger. Look on ebay and the for sale section here and you can find killer deals on big cams.

Yeah, give me the specs and what kind of idle it should have. Is the price negotiable or firm?

i'd do a search on the futral cams, they put out awesome numbers. maybe the FM11 or FM13. the cam itself isnt that expensive, 350ish is normal, but install will be pricey if you arent doing it yourself and you will surely need it tuned. also tsp has some good cams out there. do a search, and give either a call. their new torquer v.2 is showing some good numbers, the duration is at 232/234 and im not sure on the lift, but it will definitely be lopey for you!

Is your car a A4 or M6... You may want some other toys before a big cam...
If it's an M6, you may want to put some money into your suspension if you plan on hooking up, maybe some sticky tires and a new rear end if you planon racing it al all.
If it's an A4, don't be like alot of people and not go with a converter! Do your self a favor and buy a converter, then go for a cam.

Either transmision, put some money into a nice exhaust system.

if you need money for college, then I wouldnt bother with a cam swap right yet. It could be an awesome mod, but it could also be a headache. Every car reacts different to cams. Some idle great, some dont. The last thing you need would be to spend money for the install and other parts like gaskets, oil pump(?), timing chain, pushrods, valve springs, and tuning and still cant get the car to act exactly right. I'd do every bolt on possible before doing a cam swap but thats just me. If you do still want a get cammin, then something in the 222-226 range would be a nice daily driver. All cams cost the same price roughly whether they are 220/220 or 240/240 lol. Its not the cam that costs alot.. its all the other parts and labor that eat ya up lol.

i'd get headers, crank pulley, and other piddly bolt ons if I were you. Then when you get the cam, it will act very well with all your mods

How much money do you have to spend is the real question. A used cam is 250-300 on ebay, look around you can get one cheap. BUT unless your doing all the supporting mods it wont mean squat for power. This is where it gets expensive, especialy when you run bigger cams. Your going to need minimum -pushrods, valve springs, gaskets for the install. Then you'll need a tune and its more important with the bigger the cam, although fm cams will run good on a factory tune, if you buy an fm cam. You could do the cam alone and proper valvetrain upgrades for say 600 or less if you buy a used cam. You already have the ls6 intake so your ok there, next would be headers and exaust.. another 500-1200 (just headers and Y) depending on what you choose... Then your looking at a clutch down the road depending on how much power your making, mine didnt last too long after the power add. But for now if doing just a cam, and you doing the install, I dont see why you couldnt do it for 500 or less, if you buy used cam.
