Default confusing oil pressure

ok my oil pressure at operasting temp idling is a tad over 40 psi. when i leave the line hard the pressure climbs slightly like it should but drops to just under 40 almost imedately. when i shift to second it momentarily climbs to a little above 60 flutters between 60 and 40 and then sits at 40 and when i shift to 3rd it goes to a little over 60 and stays there till i stop accelerating. what could be causing this? i thought mayeb coming of the line the pump was getting starved of oil but i checked the leve land it was only a half quart low. could my pump be going bad? thanks for any help

I would replace the pump before you have to replace the engine. How many miles are on it. That just doesn't sound good.

I'd stop going WOT. I assume that's what follows leaving the line hard....and 40 psi is pushing it at 6k rpm. If you follow the 7psi per 1k rpm you just make it, but if you want 10 psi per 1k rpm you don't even have that.
