Default Valve side play [slop]?

What is the acceptable side play, lateral movement, between the valve and the valve guide. My friends valves as per a dial indicator have .008 lateral play which to me is way too much. Does anyone have any idea what the spec is? Seems like maybe .001-.002 Thanks

Default Stem to guide clearance

You can not measure the guide clearance using a dial indicator on the valve stem.

You need to remove all the valves, mic up the stems, making sure they are not worn. You then dial bore the guide holes to determine the actual stem to guide clearance. Make sure the guide holes are not tapered or out of round during the dial boring.

The clearance depends on the guide material and intended usage. Too tight and the valve stem with stick in the guide. One thou is too tight regardless of guide material.

Measuring the valve stem then the guide is the preferred method, but if the tools are not available, rocking the valve back and forth is an acceptable substitute. Specs for your cylinder head are .0037" or less.

Thank you, I also found that production clearance should be .001-.0026. Now that we have the correct clearances established, what are the consequences of .008 clearance? Is there a possibility of reduced compression, blowby, and performance? The valve very noticably flops around in the guide. What could cause this situation the heads only have about 2,000 miles on them.

loose guides will definately cause a loss in performance, and will ruin a good valve job in a short time.i'm guessing with only 2000 miles on them they had too much clearance when built, assuming everything else was in good shape and assembled properly.
