Default GM Oil Life Monitor accurate?

Does anyone here know how accurate the oil life monitors are? Mine has gone off after only 4200 miles. Just normal city driving, no racing or anything. I have added almost a quart a month in the past three months after the last oil change. I'm using GC 0W30, I figured I could go at least 6k with that oil. Mechanically, the engine is bone stock with 92k miles on it. Has anyone known these oil monitors to stop working correctly like the coolant monitors?

It's quite accurate when gauging it against regular dino oil, in my experience, but it doesn't take into account what oils you are using. for example, i use mobil 1, and run change it around 6-7k miles. However the light always comes on at around 3-4k.

reset it by holding down the trip odometer button for like 15 seconds, with the engine off and the key in the ON position. the oil change light will start to flash

Its set for regular oil in f-bodys. Since your using synthetic you could go a while longer.

My Yukon (5.3L) usually goes around 7K on the OLM. So when I go by the OLM, I use Mobil 1. In my cars that use dino oil, its 3K no matter what.

Default Oil Change Sensor

Your Oil Change Light Comes On Not Because Of Mileage But Because Of An Average Of 2 Sensors.RPM And Temperature.I Have A Heavily Modded Camaro and Beat The **** Out Of It. I Use Mobil 1 And My Light Will Come On After Only about 1,600 Miles.Higher Revs And High Temp Trigger It Sooner. Look In Manual To Confirm This?

GM states:

"The Oil Life System is programmed with a certain number of engine revolutions. As an engine runs, this number is reduced until it reaches zero and the Oil Life light or message comes on. But theres more. Operating an engine under high or low temperatures and under high load conditions subtracts (penalizes) extra revolutions so the light comes on sooner."

Not bad

Called Dupli Color and was told they do not match interior colors. I will have to try a dark gray vinyl spray paint.

Why are all the oil threads in the internal section anyway?

To clarify above though... it is accurate for oil made for standard drain intervals, not oil formulated for extended drain intervals. That doesn't really mean that any synthetic will go longer than the OLM. It depends. Most synthetics are not recommended for extended drain intervals, even though they do have better additive packages than conventionals. If you really wanted to go past what the OLM tells you then you should consider getting a used oil analysis to see how it is doing when the OLM lights up.

Are you suggesting they go to general LSX discussion?

Eh.. perhaps. The Maintenance forum has a lot of oil threads too. Oil doesn't really seem to fit in with heads, valves, camshafts, rods, pistons, etc. What do I know, I'm not a mod.
