Patriot or AFR heads on 402 block
I am planning on purchasing a 402 Shortblock Probably LS-2 aluminum block. I would prefer Fast 90/90 setup, AFR heads, cam, etc... But want to stick to a budget of maybe 8000. I have a 2000 TransAm LS-1 with 75k miles I can use some parts off of. Need opinions on who to purchase block from, which heads to use patriot Stage 3 Ls-6 heads, or AFR 225 heads keeping budget in mind, also which cam to use. I could go totaly budget and go with Patriot heads, LS-6 Intake, with Bigger TB but not sure the Power difference between the budget setup and the AFR heads with fast 90/90. My goal is about 500-540 Rwhp while still being streetable. Regarding cam choice slight rough idle is ok, and don't need to spin motor past about 6200 anyway. What kind of power would I make with the budget setup of 402 block with Patriot stage 3 heads, with LS-6 intake with Fast or similar TB. Also the patriot heads are one of my choices because of budget price (1595.00), and I do not plan on Nitrous or a blower later..........Well maybe a small shot (75-100). I also have to keep in mind cost of pushrods, gaskets, rockers, New 600hp clutch, etc...
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. Other budget heads for my combination would be an option if anyone knows which ones are better than patriots.
Thanks
Ron H.

the two arent even comparable and IMO to reach your power goal the AFR will be needed out of those choices. the only difference between the stg2 and stg3 patriots is the valve sizing, port work is the same.
a good set of heads is crutial to make power, spend the money as needed. there is nothing wrong with a budget package if you are aware of the sacrifies that you are making.
several vendors are making 530-540rwhp pretty readily with 402/408 shortblocks and AFR 225's.

What Jerami said. Heads are the area where your money is best spent. Don't cut corners there. The AFRs will not let you down. They're worth the money!

You deffinatlly want to go with the 225's. The LS-6 intake is one of those things that will get you by until you can afford to get the FAST. Once you get the FAST, I would say you could see gains up to 20 HP/TQ to the wheels. With a healthy cam, 225's, and LS-6, you should be able to break the 500 rwhp barrier.

Also the LS6 heads are money dont needed to be spent.
Use a flat top piston and even if you decide against the 225's you can use 6.0 heads. With the larger stroke your compression will be higher and you can always mill the heads to the exact compression you want.
Example I have a 408 with a .040 gasket and 6.0 heads milled to 68cc's I am right around 11.7:1 CR which should be fine.
If I switched to a non milled LS6 head I would be well over 12:1
As far as your question.
AFR all the way.
