Default oil pump access

You have to drop it but not completly, go to ls1howto.com and print it up, and follow it. Its very straight forward. And the motor stays in the car, you just drop the pan a little, its tight but easy.

There's only 10 or 12 bolts to loosen the pan and it makes taking the pump off alot easier. The one bolt on the pan can be tough to get to. I got a 10mm gear wrench and it's awesome for tight spaces.

You can leave the rear pan bolts in, but they must be loosened. The side and front ones must be removed. Just remember GM has a very specific sequence in when the pan and cover bolts must be retightened so that all surfaces mate properly and you don't have any oil leaks when you turn the key. Don't just hurredly tighten the pan and cover bolts down and cross you fingers when you start you motor. Read the procedure FIRST!
