Default What do your water pump gaskets look like?

Are they metal with orange stuff on them, or just plain paper gasket looking?

I am doing a cam swap this weekend, and got my cam from Thunder racing along with a gasket kit. The gaskets look pretty plain, just a paper gasket. Did they change the design of that gasket for the later years? My car is a 98 by the way. In the event my gaskets are the ones with the orange stuff on it, should I reuse those instead of the ones from the TR gasket kit? If they are plain looking also, will the gasket kit ones do the trick or should I look elsewhere for better gaskets?

Thanks!

Manny

I always get mine direct from a dealer and they are the metal with rubber seals. I just reused mine because they only had 19k and looked good. They are easy to change if you ever have an issue anyhow.

I'd use the '99+ o-ring gaskets instead of the '98 paper gaskets. I hate the paper gaskets!!

Grrr....

Yeah, Thunder Racing send me the paper gasket ones.....Jason...don't you work there? What's up with the cheapo gasket??

Ah well, for now, if my 98 has the crappy gasekt in it, I guess I'll take it off and use the one that came in the TR gasket kit. If the sumbitches start leaking, I'll bite the bullet and get the good ones.....we are gonna do this starting tomorrow, I probably won't be able to get a good gasket in time unless they have them in stock which is unlikely.

It's not that they will start leaking. It's that if you ever need to take it off again you will need to take out the razor blade and have some time to scrape off the gasket along with cleaning up the mess it leaves.

Hmm, by that time I will probably replace the pump anyways....the car is a 98 with 50k miles on it. Do the 98 cars have any more issues with water pumps than newer model years? Everything else seems to be shittier on the 98's....like the oil pumps, the heads, the exhaust manifolds..... My friend has a 99, and his water pump went out at like 50k miles.

Well you answered your own question right there. Your 98 pump outlasted the 99. Mine is at 103,000. I'd say they are the same.
