Default switching from stock ls1 to stock ls6 heads.

I know I know why dont I get them P&P. right now I dont have money for the afr's so I jus bought some ls6's off a forum member with the comp 921 springs already in them. I thought $875 was a pretty good price for complete heads. I looked at ls1 howto.com and it seems pretty straight forward. just unbolt and bolt back on, but is there any tricks to doing as headswap i dont know about. also do I need to buy stock ls1 or ls6 headgaskets?

I think with the mods I already have I should be good for around a 30-40rwhp gain right? right now I have ls1 intake.

I'd like to know what you guys think about this.

Adam

just get some stock type head gaskets, some new head bolts (stock aren't reusable). with your LS1 intake manifold you wont see 30-40 rwhp with the new LS6 heads. but they will make a difference.

I'd guess you will get around 25rwhp, with tuning...

Default head replacement

Id use stock type mls "mulit layer steel" head gaskets they will be reasonable to get off next time your in there. You should only have to dig off graphite once, any more is unreasonable. Use a plastic ice scraper to dig the old one off. If you use arp head bolts be sure to retorque them per the instructions. Follow the instructions to a tee when it comes to getting the coolant out of the bolt holes you cant have any in there. You might want to flush your coolant system to get out any stray gasket material out, youd be suprised how much comes out even if you thought you were careful. If your ice scraper gets dull hit it with a flat rasp. Dont let coolant sit on the pistons as it will get in the oil, i would change it anyway. Stick to the ls1howto and you will be cool.

be sure to check pushrod length because if the heads have the stock ls6 valves still in them then you will want shorter pushrods. The ls6 valves are 6mm shorter then ls1 valves.

the heads are stock and come with the comp 921 valve spring kit, I was planning on just reusing my 7.4 hardened pushrods. they should work right?
guys I appreciate your info if anybody wants to get in on this go right ahead and express what you think.

Make sure to check the preload on the lifters to be safe, but you shouldn't have any problems with the 7.4's.

I think the 2001 ls6 heads have the same length valves as the ls1 heads. I know the '02 and up are different because of the lightweight valves.

I bought a set of 243 heads but not sure if theyre worth the trouble installing them unported. From dyno's I have seen it looks like stock ls6 heads are worth 15-20rwhp and 10-15ftlbs torque on average over ls1 heads.

ya I know what you mean. I want the 59cc afr's but those will have to wait till tax time so in the mean time I will put the ls6's on. I think I will make a pretty good gain considering I just put an ls6 intake on the other day.
so new ls6 intake and stock ls6 heads I think shouold be good for around 30 or so rwhp with the mods I already have.
