Default Changing a head gasket?

I've never done this before, and im sure this question is a dumb one, but do you have to drop the motor to replace a headgasket or do you guys pull it while its in the car?

You can do it while it is in the car.

Good luck either way.

sweet, well as sweet as changing a headgasket can be, its not gone yet, but the car has been running pretty hot lately, and the new waterpump/radiator dont come in to next week so i figure i'll replace them before they blow, or is that a bad idea?

Hoe do you know you need to replace the headgasket? Which side?
