Default Attention all California people. Advise on biggest cam I can go and pass smog.

Hey all:

I live in California with the strict smog laws. I have all the bolt ons LT headers and H/C with a great tune and pass the sniffer with no problems.

It wont pass visual but it passed the sniffer with no problem.

I have the 224/224 570 lift with 114 lsa.

I keep hearing I have alot more room for more power with a bigger cam and that mine is a very small cam.

Can I go bigger and still pass smog. Or would it even be worth it? Thanks

keep the overlap in check and choose the valve events accordingly.

honesty though with what you've got i wouldnt even bother with a swap, especially if you want to stay 100% legal.

BTW, i've seen your threads in the regional forum. honestly i'd go with a set of AFR 205's and follow Tony's recipe: milled .024 and .040 cometic. i'd have the cam degree'd if it wasnt during initial install, retune, and enjoy.

i havent heard enough of DLA's head quality to make a judgment either way. if your still looking at them i'd find out who does there CNC if they outsouce, who does the finall install and valve job, port volumes and full valve lift flow.

I ended up going with stage 1.5 TEA 5.3 heads. They go on in a week or so.

Also I apperciate it when you post you opinion on my sites. Thanks

224/224 is pretty much the largest you want to get. Mine passed, but it was close. I'd look for power in other places if you are worried about passing smog.

well then i'd install the TEA's, tune, and see how you make out. you might not even want a new cam if the power is satisfactory. obviously properly setup the bigger cam will make more power but your just decreasing your chances of passing emissions legitly.

not sure if you followed the thread about smog in the regional forum but i'll state the same thing here. with the available combinations (patrick G and vortech come to mind) its gettinng to the point where huge cams, LT's, ORY's arent needed to make over 400rwhp in a completely 100% smog legal route.

The key point to staying emissions legal seems to be keeping your overlap at .006" at or under 46 degrees. Thunder Racing has just developed a new cam call the CheaTR 2 that's designed to be the most powerful emissions legal cam on the market. Check out these specs:

227/227 .639/,639 116LSA 113ICL.

This cam has great valve events for making power everywhere and best of all, the overlap is only 45 degrees at .006! This cam will work best with long tube headers and ported heads. Regardless, you'll want some good springs! I might even try it next!

I have come to the resolve that I will probably just have to buy a stock motor and swap it every two years. My Vette' wont be ready till next summer (2 year ground up project), but I know it will never pass. Nothing worse than a hot rod you cant drive.

Bah, run whatever cam you want. I'd suggest the TSP 233/239 and get a tune. When it comes to passing smog, just add methanol to the tank.

Seriously, with quite a few people in California running big cams with high compression motors and true duals, there are ways of getting around the smog ****'s.
