Cam + Daily Driver : ? (all input welcome)
Hello guys,
I am looking into getting a TR224 cam (112 LSA) on my daily driver 1999 Z28 (74k miles, A4). I am getting tuned next month (already paid) and am questioning whether or not I should put a cam into my daily driver. If something were to go wrong or if its too unbearbale there is no other option (well I suppose I could drive my gf's car). I really want a cam but am not sure if its just too much. Basically, I would like to open this thread up to people with cams in their daily driver vehicles. I am interested in how they like it and if they would do it again. Any input by anyone is welcome. Thanks.
Jason

Just about everyone on this board drives their fbodys on a daily basis. There are thousands of people on here with BIG cams in their daily drivers and I'd say that pretty much every one of them would not go back to a stock cam..
Why are you wanting the TR224 inparticular?

Pretty much any cam choice will be DDable, but some are more driver friendly than others, and require more than others, ie a stall or higher gear ratio. The 224 cam is an excellent choice for an otherwise stock setup, and it is probably the most driver friendly.

Thank you for all your input guys. I just do not want to put it in then regret it. But I don't really think that would happen.
1Quick-TA: I chose the TR224 because from what i've read it is a good DD cam and I didn't want to go to overboard with a big cam. I was thinking of the 224 from Futral but have heard they are pretty much the same. Plus, at TR the package with pushrods and springs is just $600 opposed to other places who charge a little more.

I went with Lingenfelter's GT2-3 cam and it's great for a daily driver.
It made 380rwhp/376rwtq (with bolt ons), idles like stock, gets good gas mileage and can hold it's own for a little cam.

I have the TR224 112 in my DD TA and it is an A4 but I do have a SY3500 as well. At first when I picked the car up from TR I kinda thought it was a little to much but that was due to me not driving the car for about two months. After a few days I had gotten the feel and now I love it. Great cam for just a bit more power to keep up with all the new things in cars and not to crazy for new springs every year or cam surge and gas smells. Take my word you will like it. I do
Did you think about changing that oil pump and timing chain while its down?

my car was stock for 2 yrs, then i threw a comp 224, dual springs and the rest of the bolt ons. i love the power but i'll admit that i do miss the smooth, quiet ride of my stock motor. my patriot dual springs make my motor sound like a sewing machine. but i don't mind b/c i love the new power.
if i had it all over to do again, i prolly would have gone s/c, but i know its not the best thing for these motors and that's just me.

I don't drive my car every single day of the week, but do drive it to class/work when it's not raining. The cam will be very daily driver friendly, although in your A4, I would also recommend the 114lsa. As long as you have a good tune, you won't have trouble with it surging or being a "burden" to drive.

Look into the Futral cams. Most of these cams have very good drivability. Stay on a 114 for an A4. Im running an F13, 4000 stall, 3:73's, and bolt ons. I have to say my car is just as drivable as my TR220 114 was without the 4000 stall and gears. No matter what cam you go with the better the tuner the better the drivability!

I have the TR224 on a 114 lsa, I drove it untuned for awhile, wasnt that bad, after it was tuned it ran almost like stock, I have 73k on the motor and the cam went in around 50k, daily drive it. No problems what so ever.

I have the Lunati 224/224 560/560 112 and it makea a good daily driver. Although I do have to warm it up before I can take off. LS1 Edit will only allow you to adjust the A/F ratio for closed loop mode. That means open loop (before warmed up) the motor will stumble a little. Once the PCM goes into closed loop it will use the O2s and the parameters programmed in your PCM to deliver the appropriate fuel.
With the 112 LSA the car has a noticeable lope. I get comments every day on how good the car sounds.
Good Luck,
Al
