Default NGK TR55 plug gapping results

I've always kept the gaps @ .59 as they came in the boxes. My friend said I should put them down to .45 so I did. My mileage got worse and the car would idle rougher on a cold start and there's more surge under 1,800rpm. To top it off it would always intermittantly throw a SES light. The code is for the map sensor.

Yesterday I put the gap back to .59 and ALL the problems went away.

Just thought I would share.

To go to .045, you're better off using a TR5 as it comes gapped at .039.

Identical plug to the TR55, just colder. The plug mfg. don't recommend bending more than +/- 10.

However, I hear what your saying.

I however did put in TR5's at .045 for this new motor and it seems to like them just fine. I'm also at 11:1 compression; perhasp that's the difference?

Actually, the TR5 is a "hotter" heat range than a Tr55. TR6 is the next step cooler than TR55

the shortening of the gap is an old trick for OLD cars with high comp and a weaker ignition system but on our cars it does nothing good
