Default My self ported stock heads

Well, since I had the heads off I figured I may as well clean them up and port them a little bit, might be worth 10 or 15 hp. Basically all I did was remove most (not all) of the rocker arm bolt "hump" and took a little off the swirl ramp on the intakes. All I did for the exhaust was take a little off the valve guide area and smooth out the roof. I didn't do too much, but it still took a few hours just to do what I did. I am just reusing the stock valves after lapping them in. What do you guys think? Will it be worth a little extra power?

sounds like it to me. smoother airflow = power. good you didn't go crazy too, on a stockish setup.

Ya, I don't know enought about porting to do a real port job on my heads. So I just wanted to clean/smooth them up a little. I read a few posts by
Bo White (he's the man) and tried to follow about what he recommended. I probably could have cut a little more from the swirl area, but thats OK. I would rather leave a little bit then take to much and mess up the velocity.

not to be a "dick", but looks like you still have a ways to go on cleaning them up....they still have quite a bit of casting surface......

good start though.....and go ahead and take all the "bump" out of the rocker stud boss (don't worry about braking through)......

I was mainly trying to show what actual material I was taking away with those pics. I did go ahead and smooth out as much of the casting roughness as I could. I will see if I can snap a pic of the finished product.

You can afford to hog out the exhaust port some more and smooth it out with a 120gt flap wheel or other fine grit polishing buff. The exhaust port likes to be smooooooooth .

there is some debate on rough and smooth surfaces with respect to better flow/less drag. turbulence caused at the boundary layer by a slightly rough surface does seem to reduce drag. however, if you haven't smoothed up the short side radius and smoothed the combustion chamber to remove hot spots, or spots where combustion migh+t spontaneously occur, you might want to take a look at that.

If you want to see a good foundation port look at my pics in the above thread. "Cleaning up" the runner doesnt do much good. You need to take out material and contour the valve guide. The most important part is getting a good valve job and a back cut aftermarket valve.
