Default Valve tap after switching oil?

I bought a 2000 ws6 with 69k on it, i switched over to mobil 1 10w30 and after that i've noticed that once the motor gets hot, it has a valve tap, any particular cause to this? I'm thinking because mobil 1 is a thinner oil, im just curious as to if anyone else has noticed this after switching? and do you think switching over to mobil 1 0w40 would take care of that?

What were you running before, that may help. Mobil-1 10W-30 is about 10 Cst when hot, almost into the 20W range but still a 30. Try the German Castrol, Amsoil 5W-30 or the Mobil-1 0W-40, either one will have more viscosity when hot.

Yes, but personally I would try another synthetic. Do you know which oil they used, you can look up the hot viscosity for it and this may provide a clue to what is happening.

Agreed, try another synthetic. Try a few. I run German made castrol 0w30, which is pretty thick compared to any of the mobil1 Xw30's. Its still not perfect as my cold piston slap seems to be more pronounced, but hot noise and valvetrain (sewing machine) noise is quieted. Plus the virtues of running this synthetic far outweigh any noises anyway.

The dealer will just use regular conventional oil because its cheaper. If they had used synthetic, you'd know... Its more than twice the price.

Unfortunately theres a lot more research required than just looking at the weight rating. If you dont feellike reading page after page on the matter, just use what other people are having good results with. Some of the more popular oils are:

German Castrol 0w30
Belgian Castrol 5w40
Amsoil 5w30
Mobil1 0w40

Do some research here and on www.BobIsTheOilGuy.com . Theres plenty of oil analysis results (scientific proof) as to how these oils are performing in the ls1.
