Default head gasket size

whats the differance between the years? does it matter
12498543 1997-2001 LS1 / LS6 Head Gasket Kit
12498544 2002 and Newer LS1 / LS6 Head Gasket Kit

I got a set of AFR 205s for my 2000, but they sent the 12498544 part number and I was wondering if it will work on my Y2K?

is the part number 12498544 the .051, .058, or 060 thickness

thanks

Looks like you were sent the thick (.060") GM MLS gaskets. While they're an improvement over the graphite gaskets used in previous years, you'll give up quench and power potential compared to running .045" Cometic gaskets.

Yes they will work. The MLS are better but also thicker. but it shouldnt be enough to cause a noticeable power difference. On the head gasket changes ive done i cant say i have ever seen a power decrease afterwords.

I'd say you'll be fine switching to those.

the switch is coming only because im whiching to AFR 205 heads.
Im wondering because each size effects compression.

is 12498544 the .051, .058, or 060 thickness

If the gaskets are MLS multi layered steel then they are .060. If they are graphite then they are .053. Gasket thickness changes compression slightly, but moreso affects quench. Quench optimally should be .035-.040. Cometics .045 though expensive would easy give you 10+ hp over the .060.

I think you may be a little off on the 10RWHP between the gaskets. You are correct about more compression = more RWHP, Im just not sure if it's that much.

Do a search , I think it's an easy 10+ hp. At the very least run the graphite OEM's at .053. Thats what I'm using , I'm still mad at myself because I didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks for the .045 Cometics, but my car had already been down for 2 months already. Next time my heads come off it will be Cometics even if they are a rip off.
