Default How Big a Cam can I run???

Anybody in CA (or anywhere else for that matter), have any idea how big a cam I can run and still be able to pass smog? I was told a 224 cam could still pass, but I haven't tried. I have a mild 218 cam in my stroker and it came up as an ultra-low emmissions motor (after tuning). I'm lookin to get as much out of it as I can but still get past the sniffers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

an excellent question, I would assume tuning can make even a nasty cam decent emission wise. You might even consider having a "emissions test day tune"

Im researching Cam/Head combo myself, but dont want to swap parts every 2 years...

How often do you have get tested in CA ? If it's 2 or more years put in a big boy cam then swap it out when you go for the test.

ultra low, that's awesome

I imagine you could gain HUGE power by uping the cam size. Of course, the stock manifolds will hurt. Unfortunately though, I can not answer your question.

Doesn't passing emissions have more to do with amount of overlap? I thought if you kept it positive (dang, it's not negative, is it???), you can probably pass with a good tune on all but the biggest 230+ cams.

someone got the LT1 CC306 cam to pass cali emissions once with a spot on tune, specs are 230/244 @ .050", .510"/.540", 112 LSA I believe. Should be able to be done in an LS1 as well

zero to -4 overlap @ .05 seems to be the range for guys with a typical good home tune. Using XE-R or similar fast lobes that has translated to a 224/224 114 cam being a fairly safe bet. People have made bigger cams pass using a higher idle and carefull tuning.

Since you have stock manifolds and cats, I wonder how much overlap you really want. You definitely need exhaust help. Maybe something like a 220/230 115 +3 or a 224/232 116 +4 would open up your top end a bit without killing the low end TQ that you now enjoy. Using an XE-R or LSK intake lobe will probably make a big increase in area under the curve if you are using a mild comp lobe right now.

I'm going to tempt fate and get a set of Kooks LTs with a catted y-pipe. I know it won't alter the emissions but it moves the stock placement of the cats (a No-No in CA) so it won't pass the visual. I may have a line on somebody who will just do the test and not worry about the visual.... if that's the case I'm not worried. But I'm still interested in upping my cam, that's why I'm wondering what will work. Since I still want it fairly streetable I'll probably stick with a 224/224 cam.
