Default Someone Please Help!!!

ok guys heres the deal...my 98 formy has a problem...basically right around 2-3k rpm, there is a ticking comming from the pass side of the engine ...now, the ticking is mildly sparatic and not extreamly loud...and it also does not occur while at idle....does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be? thanks every one!

depends on what kind of tickin your hearing i guess.....it could be an exhaust leak...check your exhaust manifold and all where it bolts up to the engine and the rest of the exhaust, make sure there aren't any cracks or anything......just my opinion

its not exhaust...it sounds like it is comming from the top of the pass head right around the 3rd cyl....some of the dealers seem to think piston slap?

How 'bout EGR valve fitting in the exhaust manifold ?

When that seal leaks there is a "loud" ticking noise present

Check valve in AIR manifold
Rocker
Lifter
Piston slap will usually not show up at a specific RPM off idle but it's possible.Take your time in finding it before you start tearing things apart.

i had the dealership diagnos it...they said...piston slap ...duh duh duhhhh ....im probably gunna go with that...and its looking to be about 4500 for a complete rebuild ...and i can basically bring in any aftermarket and they will put it on...eg. connecting rods ...so that is probably the road im gunna take...now would it be semi ok to drive (easy on her) like to from work ect? ....

I dunno man. I beat the living **** outta my engine and i dont have piston slap adn we have near teh same milage. I have run the car hard from when i got it new with 30 miles on it. I did, however, bend numerous pushrods. They make quite a bit of noise. I can imagine them makin the noise only at a specific rpm. I knwo that when ym car had the stock cam the exhaust made alot of noise between 2-3k rpm. Maybe they are related. Checkin teh puchrods is easy adn if it is them then it will cost a little over 100 bucks.
On the other hand if you do decide to go with a new motor DONT have the dealership do it. PLEASE. They arent anymore capable at building engines as a 2 year old is. And 4500 is ALOT of money for a rebuild. I know it includes install adn all the work involved but you could do ALOT better. When my engine finally breaks im gonan get new pistons and rods and get all the machining done adn i priced it all out and its 750 for pistons and rings and another 7-800 for rods and then the maching for the clock adn crank would be 400-500. So that leaves me at 2k + installation. I am gonna take it out and put it together BUT i can assure you that you can get it alot cheaper then 4500. GL

well, 4500 is from a local machine shop...i would never trust a dealer with a rebuild!...and im still lokking around but the only prob is...i have insurance to cover repair on all internally lubricated parts...up to 4k....so in essence it would be 500 for rebuild...so i dunno....and i mean...i have had this car for close to 3 months and only ran it hard the first 1 1/2...then gas got way expensive...so its not like i have been running it to red all the time!.....just some!

Well, The Dealership That Did The Diagnostic Said It Was Piston Slap...however One Of The Mechs. Said He Thought It Was The Connector Pins...so What Do You All Think? Slap Or Pins?
