LS6 pistons have an dry film lubricant applied to the skirts of the piston and was used also in LS1's from 2001 and on.

"In mid-April ’01, there was a change in the LS1/LS6 piston which carried over to MY02. To address a limited amount of complaints about "cold piston knock", there was a small reduction in piston-to-bore clearance and new pistons, having skirts coated with a polymer, antifriction material, were introduced."

Don't you guys use a different system of octane ratings over there that gives higher octane readings?

There is a difference in the material of the pistons used in the ls1 and ls6.
the original ls1 piston was made by Mahle usinf an aluminium silicon alloy called M124.
LS6 pistons are made with M142, which has a higher contenent of cooper and nickel than M124; M142 is stronger and exibits reduced expansion at higher temps than M124.
this helped the Gen III team use tighter bore clearances to minimize oil consumption and piston noise while maximizing durability.

this info was copied from this book, which is amazing, I really recomend to buy and read CONSTANTLY.
this is my Nth time and still find ned and usefull info.....

I bought a sed used in ebay, ther where great, put oven clealer in crown and rings and ther are as good as new.
the rings are almost new (according to seller < 600mi) the second ring is barelly seated, still black.
also definetelly buy arp rod bolts and new bearings (race!)

be carefull on what block you are shoving them, I bought a brand new ZO6 block and without rings the fit VERY tight, mi shop where amazed at howh tight, they wanted to hone the NEW block ARGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I konw, is not like I live in Cuba or something but this shop (very good machinery) has never seen a LSx!
