Question engine sounds like a diesel untill full opersting temp.

i know my car has piston slap, but lately the sound dose not go away until about 190 degrees . As the RPMs reach around 2k this clattering gets louder and faster and sounds like a damn diesel. I always thought this was just piston slap but can piston slap get worse over time? The ol' LS1 is reaching 96K miles and I dont beat on her(that much). I did buy an aftermarket warrantee when I bought the car that expires at 98.5K miles. I took it to a dealership once and got this response:" LS1s' are just noisy man". What could this be? should I try another shop? I want to have some good tech info before I pay 80 bucks for someone to tell my I have a noisy engine and that be the end of it. Thanks, Josh.

It is piston slap, and it can get worse. If it is not burning oil do not worry about it. The tendancy of a short skirt piston is to rock creating slap. If you can find someone willing to fix it, they will only change the pistons. They will use your same rings and not even hone the block. I switched to Amsoil 5W40 and it quieted mine down quite a bit.

1. CHOKE THE STUPID MECHANIC
sorry I did not find more KILLING SMILES.
2. go to another dealer and LEAVE the car there, youre not negociating the ex waranty, YOURE DEMANDING IT

after the work is done sell the engine, and buy a zo6 engine:::::.....

I had piston slap....kept getting worse...went to three different dealerships...finally a reputable one replaced the motor under warranty. Call GM and file a complaint against the dealership that told you that BS that LS1's are noisy...gotta ruffle the feathers sometimes!! That's AN EXCUSE not a fix...for factory F...Up!! Best of luck to you.

Yup, there is a whole website dedicated to piston slap. The mechanics are told to tell you anything to keep from replacing the engine because GM doesnt want to deal with it. Just keep bitching and they should eventually replace your engine. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

too bad i bought mine at 41K (factory warranty is 3yr or 36K ) and i didnt have the extended warranty. so here i am sitting with piston slap and nothing to do about it. doesnt burn oil though thankgod. just annoying as hell

so what oil seems to work well with quieting down slap while still giving ultimate protection? Amsoil 5W40 euro? 6 qts? where to get? thanks

The Amsoil filter that matches your car is the SDF32. The SDF30 has the same specifications but is almost an inch and a half longer. The Euro 5w-40 seems to be the hot oil as of late and it may be worth a try in your car.

Mine significantly is quieter on cold startup with the Amsoil 5W40. It is still there just not nearly as bad. On warm restarts it is as loud as other oils I have tried but doesn't do it as long. i have used GC 0W30, Mobile 1 0W40, and RP 5W30. Amsoil is much qiueter. Give it a try. Some guys on here will give you a discount. OH go with the 5W40 it is better for the LS1 the 30 weights in any oil are too thin especially if she is seeing track time. Also use the K&N HP2006 long filter with 6 quarts. The K&N's flow very well.

Check out bobistheoilguy.com there are plenty of good used oil anlysis with Amsoil. It is one of the best performing. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.
