Default barbell restrictor?

I'm reading "how to build high performance ls1/ls6" by Handzel and on page 113 it says there is a "barbell restrictor" that goes in the back of the block and gets held in place by the rear cover. Has anyone ever heard of this before? And does anyone know where to get one?

That is the oil galley plug. It's pretty cheap <$4. Most dealers should have them, but you might need to call around.

I nearly left it out. Without it you can pretty much forget about oil pressure. The machine shop discarded it when they did my block. Got one at the chevy dealer.

Quick question about this, would a 98' LS1 have this piece already in it from the factory?

It doesnt hurt oil pressure....

It will allow the oil to bypass your oil filter which is even worse if you happen to forget it because you won't see any signs of anything being wrong till you wipe out a bearing or two from unfiltered oil running thru everything.....not good obviously and will ultimately have a negative effect on every component in the engine assuming you run the engine a fair amount of time before realizing it.

Don't forget the "barbell".....LOL

Tony,
The o-ring on the end is what seals the galley. Without the barbell in place, oil pressure will be near zero. I DON'T want you to ask ME how I know....LOL.

Oil will pump into the rear cover and drain right back into the pan.

Yep...you guys are exactly right (I won't "ask"....LOL).

I was thinking more about it's main function than the fact the oil would actually be pumping right thru to the rear sump area without the back of the diverter in place.

Thats actually a better deal IMO.....In the event you do forget to install it when you rebuild/overhaul your engine, at least you can figure out and rectify the situation with a high likelihood of no damage done except for a slightly bruised ego....
