Default Oil Pressure Saga

Ok as I posted earlier, when I start my truck I get 60lbs of oil pressure, but if I let it idle for any length of time it goes to 0. After talking to people here and elsewhere I decide that the cause is the oil galley plug in the back of the block, so I have it replaced. Well guess what, that didn't fix it. So now I'm going to replace the O-ring even though I've been told I would still have some oil pressure even if there was no O-ring at all. So let's recap: at start 60lbs., at idle 0lbs., sustained rev over 1500 rpm 30-40lbs. Does this sound like I have something else wrong i.e. bearings, lifters etc., or does it sound like the O-ring is causing the pump to completely lose it's prime. Please Help

Have you hooked up a mechanical gauge to see what the pressure really is?

yes I installed the TR cheaTR cam, rollmaster double roller tc,lingenfelter hi-vol pump, and was very careful with the o-ring although I didn't use a new one(didn't realize the inportance until after the fact reading) and those are the readings from the mech. guage: 60lbs at start, 0lbs. after 10-20 seconds at idle, 40lbs or so with a sustained rev over 1500 rpm

the o-ring may have been damaged to begine with. Also, i would drop the oil pan and check for something clogging the pickup. What is the oil pressure at cruise?

I don't know cuz I've got the guage temporarily rigged up under the hood so I can't see it when I'm driving. I just did the swap and got it running the other day; I want to get my factory guages operational but have'nt had time so I just rigged this up in the mean time. But if I sustain a rev of 1500-2000 rpm I can maintain apox.40lbs. I'm going to change the o-ring but I've had people tell me that I should have more oil pressure than I do even with no o-ring at all. Does this sound accurate?

no, you should have less pressure without one. like i said, you may have damaged some cam bearings in the swap or had a messed up o-ring to begine with. I would start there. After all, if you dont have pressure, you are in trouble already.

let me rephrase that, they say I should have more than 0lbs at idle without an o-ring. If this is true then is something else wrong like bearings or lifters or something. I'm pretty positive I didn't damage the cam bearings during the cam install though.

Is it possible to change the o-ring without removing the timing chain cover and all?

if you installed a double roller TC, then did you get the spacer behind the oil pump in correctly if you didnt then you could be leaking oil under preasure but it has enough restriction to build pressure when the rpm's are up.

Man I can second guess myself all day long, but I'm pretty sure I did all that stuff right. I kinda mocked the oil pump up with the spacers in there before I put it together cuz you know how the spacer on the right is triangular shaped but it's not a perfect triangle and if you put it on upside down the hole won't line up correctly. But when I put it all together did I do it right? Your guess is as good as mine. Also when I put the pickup tube in the oil pump I did it twice cuz the 1st time it just didn't look right, the second time it felt better going in(oh yeah) and it looked better too. But like I said from what I read prior to all this I was unaware that I needed to use a new o-ring. I just can't see the o-ring causing me to have zero oil pressure at an idle, 10-15lbs maybe but 0, I don't understand.

again, is it possible to replace the o-ring by just dropping the pan down and not pulling everything off the front of the motor? Has anyone attempted this?

sound like oil is bypassing somewhere when it gets hot and the viscosity drops.....i know it sux but i'd recheck the spacers

actually the engine doesn't even get a chance to get hot before it loses oil pressure. If it idles for more than like 10-15 seconds oil pressure is gone

What type of lifters did you install?
