Default LS1 newbee question

Well I just picked up my WS6 a month ago.. I want to do a heads and cam swap and I want around 400rwhp on motor.. I have been searching and have been seeing a bunch of people using stock ported heads with the TR 224 cam and achieving this goal.. I have a opertunity to pick up some stock 99 heads for 100.00 and was wonderring... I did a search on the differences between the 97-99 heads and the 2000-2002 heads.. ported would the 99 heads flow as well as a set of ported 02 heads if they were ported exactly the same?? basically should I buy the 99's and have them ported so I can still drive my car while the heads are being ported, or should I just use my 02's?? I dont want to spend a grand on a set of heads and I have a big hookup at the machine shop that built my V6 motor.. so for 350.00 for the porting and 100.00 for the heads I could have a decent set of heads.. any help would be appreciated..

Well, if you have a contact that can save you a lot of money, I would just go that route. I'm not sure if you can get the same exact CNC ports on a 99 head as some of the later castings. You should call up one of the sponsors if you were interested in doing that. Otherwise, you'd be pretty close to your goal if they did a good job on the heads.

if all you want is 400 rwhp just leave the heads alone and do full bolt ons and a big *** cam.

I'd stick with the heads you have..........get a nice cam now and get good heads when you can afford it. If your patient and keep your eyes open, you'll fall on a good deal. Try to grab some LS6's and port those or go with some AFR's. If your going to steer clear of forced induction (nitrous don't count) then you could go with the smaller 5.3L heads as well (lots of people love these heads). Personally, I'd go with some AFR's milled for high compression and spray on it. You'll have your 400+rwhp and an additional 100 or so on tap for your occasional visit to the track. JMO............

Thanks for the input everyone.. I had a big cam in my V6 and I got sick of it.. My buddie just did a 224 cam in his 01 SS and you cant even tell it has a cam in it except when you first start it.. once it warms up it idles like it is a stock cam.. I messed up my V6 by putting a big cam in it.. sure it made alot of power but I was always breaking ****, getting shitty gas miles and always afraid of taking it on long trips like back home to Jersey.. I am going to talk to my machine shop and see what they think about the heads and go from there.. Once again thanks for the input..
