Default spring compressor

hey guys, i was told that some members here on the board have made their own ls1 spring compressors for like $20 instead of buying a new one for over $100.

Does anybody have one? or at least a drawing/print, something? I work in a machine shop, would this be something i could throw together?

I'm thinking about doing my first cam swap this winter, so I'm just trying to learn everything before i start buying parts

thanks guys!

cool, thats a simple enough part

would anybody mind sending me deminsions or something of the parts. I don't plan to make these to sell, just to do my own personal cam swap

hope i don't ruffle any feathers!

I also made my own tool like that. It is by far the best spring compressor I have used, especially changing springs while on the car.

There is a guy in the tools section selling them with a hardened bolt for $40. Probably a good idea. I made my own & I went through 6 grade 8.8 bolts doing my springs.

Bolt is 8mm x 1.25 thread x 2.5" long

This one actually worked well on most of the springs.

i've used almost a half dozen different spring compressors, ranging from 20 bucks to 200 bucks. hands down the bests one is the crane/vhp spring tool, you'll never use anything else again. you cant put a price on a proper tool IMO.

Tim's valve spring tool is great. It's held up well thru several spring changes.

I agree 100%. The crane tool was worth every penny of the price tag. Does two springs at a time and no risk of stripping out a rocker bolt hole with the pressure. Even if I only used it one time it was worth it.
