any tricks to mounting a dial indicator to check preload. can't seem to keep it steady

I had an old steel plate laying around. I put the valley cover gaskets over it and marked four holes then drilled them out. I can bolt it to the top of the block and stick the mag base on the plate.

Obviously this wont work if your valley cover or intake are installed.
