Default Guys that measured PR's with Dial Calipers?

Just got the push rods I ordered for the car. I used an adjustable PR to get everything measured out and needed a 7.325 push rod. Ordered them and got them today. Decided to check them with digital dial calipers just for the hell of it and they are 7.338 long. They are stamped 7.325 right on them. I then measured my 7.350's that I had and they are 7.362, while the 7.40's where 7.409. I checked them with 2 sets of calipers. Is this normal? Are the ***** on some a lil more pointed and the effective end surface on them still get them to where they should be? I'm used to things being exact in situations like this and needed the length pr I ordered. Any input?

IMO your calipers are not zeroed. Your off .012, .013 and .009 thousands. So your measuring is the same everytime. They do have some + or - range on them with then reason but I don't know what it is, like 7.325 + or - .005? Try using the dial style, not to fond of the digital types in machine world seen problems in the past.

Used two calipers, one digital and one non. Both read the same +/- .001

John, is the difference in measured to ordered length taking into account the different type of ball ends? On some style they are longer then others, thus your measurement would be different. If you used a comp cams pushrod checker, and ordered that style ends comp pushrods, then you should be dead on. I got this info from the Comp Cams pushrod checker I got, and noticing the same issue before.

That is good info Charlie! That has to be it. I used the comp pr checker and have another brand of push rod. Will the effect on preload be the same though, as is this length difference on the tip of the ball and not in direct contact as it sits down the ball some?

I've had similar experience, but no conclusions as to why yet, other than machining tolorance. For ***** and grins, did you measure all 16 push rods?

Every damn one of them and just got more pissed as I went! I'm going to sears tonight with the PR's in my pocket and I'm grabbing there most expensive best calipers and measuring them again. They will prolly look at me like I've lost my mind! I'll post results later.

Went today with push rods in pocket and checked them with the dail calipers at the store. I checked them over and over and they are .013 longer then specified. Really bugs me as I went through all the trouble of doing it right and ordered pushrods for them to be wrong. The PR's was from Trend, which makes about every pushrod our vendors sell. I wonder how many wrong pr's we have running around.
