just do lots of reading and look at a lot of pictures of ported lsx heads to find out exactly what you want to do.I would practice on a cheaper 853 before i did an ls6 head, just my opinion.I was in the same place you are and had my ls6's done by very experienced porter.I have done small block heads but didnt want to chance it on the 243's.There is plenty of material out there and if your confident give it a shot.Et performance has a lot of good pics on there site.

That thread has some pretty good info in it.

Here are some pics too. The first two are 241 casting, but you get the idea. The third is 243 I believe.

If your gonna p&p yourself, leave the intake runners kinda rough. This helps with fuel atomization. You can make the exhaust runners glass smooth. I was told this by a buddy of mine. He does cylinder heads for speed inc. His name is rich groh. Good luck with your grinding.

This has been argued both ways... Fuel atomization is not important on our cars since the injector sprays right on the back of the hot valve instantly vaporizing the fuel anyway. However thats not to say you shouldnt leave the intake rough. Recent theories surmise that the rough texture creates a boundary layer which, sort of an air lubricant. Its much the same idea as the dimples on golfballs helping them fly farther and straighter.

thanks for all the input, i just finished up one cylinder head, im not doing a all out race port and polish just takeing out some of the casting marks smoothing out the area around the valve guide then polishing it off. Finished off the exhaust side w/ 150 grit and finished off the intake side @ 80 Grit. In my opioun the LS6 head is a pretty decent head to begin w/ for street/strip use
