Default Installing a cam and advancing it

Wondering if there is a general rule of thumb for advancing a camshaft during installation and how many rpms it brings the power band down.

I believe the general rule is for every degree of advance the RPM band moves down ~100 RPM (I'm not sure of the exact number, someone verify). This also *usually* causes loss of peak HP (if you actually care).

Keep in mind that it will also close your intake valve earlier resulting in an increase in DCR. For most, this change will not be significant enough to matter, if you are already experiencing a detonation problem due to compression ratio - advancing the cam will make it worse.
