where is the dipstick for the transmission?

i believe that the transmission is in the back as a transaxle

There is a plug on the side of the tranny pan. To check you need to have the car running and then the plug needs to be removed. If there is fluid coming out the hole then there is enough fluid in it, if not then you need to add enough Dexron/MerconIII until it starts to come out the hole.

wow, that's pretty shitty. i guess they have a sensitive sensor or something to indicate how much fluid is in it?

Yes, it's a pain. They are fussy about having the fluid level just right.
