I know people have their preferences, but here is a test. I'm not all knowing, but my dad along with me know that Al doesn't get along with MORE ZINC and THIRTY TIMES more magnesium. Guess it wouldn't make a difference tho as long as you change your oil regularly.

Anti-wear: molybdenum, phosphorus, zinc
Antifreeze inhibitor: potassium, boron, silicon, sodium
Detergent additive: boron, calcium, magnesium, and barium

Anti-wear: NO molybdenum, MORE Zince
Antifreeze inhibitor: less than half as much boron,
Detergent additive: 1/3 less calcium, thirty times more magnesium

I take it that people have already seen this? or too many arguments about what oils to use? anyways just thought it was some useful information.

the comparisons don't say whose better than who....it just states how the oils work and whats different about them...you then can make your decision from that

lol, i knew someone would ask about that. I haven't searched for tests with it but because you have to change it so frequently compared to other conventional oils it really doesn't matter. Haven't heard of people blowing there motors...haven't really looked but you have to change it every 2k miles or something like that.

I bet there is a comparison somewhere with it or at least a writeup about Royal purple. People have made dyno gains with it and the only problem is that you must change it so often

they are going to be doing a study on Royal purple and another oil(s) if you read through the articles about the Mobil 1 and Amsoil.

Please share some info with me...whats Patmans comments on this? I want to know b/c I hate debates....people bullshit too much in debates

Keep in mind guys, this test is no longer going on, and the results are from older formulas of both Amsoil and Mobil 1. It was a good test, I wish he had continued on to the next round of oils.

Not sure about those studies, but I know at bobistheoilguy.com you can truly conclude this:

Royal Purple (5w30) is too thin, and oil analysis has shown it a poor choice for the LS1. The Racing Royal Purple oil is a good choice however.

Mobil 1 5w30 also too thin, I believe in the range of kinematic viscosity 9.5-12 that defines a 30wt oil, its close to 9.5, meaning its viscosity is to thin.
Mobil1 5w40 T&SUV is an awesome choice, showing excellent oil analysis. RP and M1 are thin oils, and stepping to the 40wt (which is thin for a 40wt but falls in our requirement category perfectly) proves well.

Redline 5w30, Certain Amsoil products (can't remember which ones), and of course, german castrol 0w30 are excellent choices as well. Don't use Mobil1 5w30 or RP 5w30, analysis results from blackstone labs has proven them as a bad choice for our engines.

Can't go wrong with these. I know Patman would agree (though I don't want to put words in his mouth), and he'd also suggest certain Amsoil products that kick *** as well as he did for me, but I don't know which ones, though one of the good ones is the 5w40 European formula.

We need to do all of our research before we post some false info about products....I think there have been some bad comparisons going on somewhere...

CASTROL Vis @100C is 12.2
MOBIL1 Vis @ 100C is 11.3

are they that different?? I mean really(yes i realize that is a difference, even though it is only 1.1)

ALSO if you notice that LS1's like the thinner oil meaning 30W, the CASTROL is already almost a 40W oil...sitting at 12.2

how is the Vis rating of Mobil1 5w30@100 11.3, but the 10w30@100 only 10 ? that dont make any sense

I've noticed that on some of the Amsoil products also. Some of their thinner formulas have higher TBNs (& other specs) than the thicker stuff.

For Amsoil recommendations, I have sold a lot of the Amsoil Euro Formula 5w40 to my fellow LS1 drivers here in the Pacific NW, as well as around the country. It's a popular choice, one of their newer formulations.

Another good choice is the Amsoil Series 2000 oil, in 0w30. That one is an extended drain interval for severe use, and can go on a 1 year interval.

And for a more cost effective choice, you could go with Amsoil's XL 5w30. I use that oil, and change it every 6 months (once before race season, once after).

A mobil1 10w-30 oil will be closer to SAE viscosity 30.0 @ 210 F than a 5w-30 mobil 1 oil because the 10w30 oil has less modifiers. this is generallly true of oils with more narrow viscosity range over temperature compared to oils with a wider viscosity range over temperature. A 30.0 SAE weight oil @ 210F will measure approx 9.7 cSt.

I know this is an old thread but which oil of amsoil is the best when you have ticking. I did not have this before M1 10-30w. Is the 5-40W too much for a daily driver that does not race? Will it flow well through a ac delco filter?
