Default Weird corrosion on valley pan?

Today while we were taking the heads off of a 2000 Firebird there was a lot of a reddish, sandy feeling corrosion between the heads and the valley pan. There was a good bit of the stuff. The car had the heads off about 4000 miles ago and everything was clean then and it is only driven on nice days. Also there is not much sand around. My question is has this happened to anyone else and what is it?

Thanks

Could it be rust ? I don't know where you would be getting rust from though

You know what they say... a picture is worth a thousand words
