Default oil pump mods

has any body done there own porting on ls1 oil pump and added a shim under oil pump spring to increase oil pressure.if yes is there some where I can go to see how its done? book I have on ls1 high perf. says how its done plus says shim can be purchased at SLP but, I cant find it on there online store. did you come up with your own idea that still working on your motor now? how/what did you do your own oil pump mod? any help on this would be appreciated.

thanks

The porting is easy if you have an air grinder and a carbide bit. The shim is simple, I made one on a lathe. How much oil pressure do you want to gain? A shim of .060 will help, some people go .090, big is .125. I made a .145 for an engine that had too much bearing clearance and that fixed it.

Where can you get these shims from?

Cool

There is a plug in the bottom of the oil pump. You remove that plug and you see a spring. The spring seats inside the plug when it is screwed in.

You can buy some washers that have an OD just small enough to fit inside the PLUG. The next smaller size washer i found was a little too small for my liking. This causes more pressure on the spring. I did alot of research on this before my cam swap i did a few weeks ago and went with it.

I took my oilpump plug to a hardware store and bought some stainless washers that would ALMOSTTTTTTT fit inside of it. I took them back home and put them over a pair of needle nose pliars then used my dremmel to SHAVE a little off the edge. They slipped in perfectly after the modification. 3 of them (stacked inside the plug) made me about a .120-.125 shim. Apply some loctite to the threads on the plug (comes with it from the factory), and screw that baby back in. Mine was MEGA hard to get out, so i put quite a bit of grunt on it when i screwed it back in. This seems to be good for a 10psi increase (perfect for 90% of people).

I did these mods to a ported ls6 pump from futral. My oilpressure at startup is like 65-70 psi cold. It drops to about 40-45 when fully warmed up and refuses to go any lower. WOT pressure is 65-70psi at LEAST, all the time. This is in a 98 with 112k miles on the clock too My oil pressure USED to sit at about 25-30 when warm and climb to about 55-60 MABY at WOT.

Here are some pics of the plug, spring, and washer. Also some pics as to what i put the washer on, and how i shaved the outside edge off. If you dremmel it like this, is grinds off a small amount, AND spins the washer so that you shave off an even amount all the way around. Grind some, then see if it will fit inside and slide to the bottom of the plug, if it won't, just grind some more.

Maby this will make it into a sticky somewhere

I would suggest getting a pump that is already ported. Its not a real big mod, but every little bit counts Futral, thunder, TSP, etc. all sell them.

Yes, mild porting to both inlet and outlet. Leave the bypass alone. You will see once you have the oil pump in front of you disassembled. Dremel and file is all you need.

TheBlurLS1, so you installed the washer between the plug (hex head) that has to be removed and the spring?

Yes, the picture of the washer sitting on the plug is because i have not shaved it down yet. I'm showing that it will almost go in. Once it's made a bit smaller, it will drop INTO the plug and rest on the bottom. Put a total of 3 in and viola, you've got enough shim

That pump is my old one, i went and found it in my shop to take some pictures.

put washers together and measure it w/ outside micrometer or use feeler gage. try to get same thickness and add up feeler gage to see what you come up with. or take washers to an auto shop or parts store and have them measure it for you.

Almost 3k on the car since the oil pump mod. Oil pressure is outstanding.

I used a tape measure, 1/8" = .125 I made damn sure it wasnt MORE than .125 though. Thats why i mentioned earleir that it was between .120-.125.

It was easier lol And i doubt i could have gotten a stock one for 50 bux. AND they port them every day. AND i dont feel as comfortable taking it completly apart as i do about unscrewing a plug, and screwing it back in
