As a rule of thumb, shorter duration cams (any duration similar to most factory cams) produce more torque and less HP and it all happens below about 5,000 RPM's. The inverse is also true. Longer duration cams (.050" durations greater than 220 degrees) produce more HP than torque and the HP peak is above 6,000 RPM's.

How do you plan to use your car? What are your goals for the car?

i have a custom futral cam.
cam only i put down 383hp/418tq threw a 4000 yank and a 9 inch on slicks.
this is on a carbureted setup, so the EFI results may vary.

a 6spd, 10 bolt and some high pressure tires and i think i could have squeezed some more out of her.
good luck

mrr23:

Did you actually get better torque with the A/F at 14.0+ below 5000 rpm? I would have thought being a little richer and adding a couple degrees of timing might have made more power

Hello,

Was the torque converter locked or unlocked during the dyno run?

Here's his graph, same cam that I have, but I didn't make as much power. I've got a less flowing exhaust and 107.5k miles on my car

Does this cam lope pretty hard? Can you get it from one of the vendors or just order from Comp Cams? XE lobes?

wonderful thing about wideband o2s. when they work, they ar a good thing. when they don't, it's a bad thing. the pump forthe wideband o2 box for the tailpipe sniffer was broke. so, the wideband readings were false.

converter unlocked.

Didn't get exact numbers because I wasn't really as pleased as I thought I'd be. It was at least in the 380's because I remember one pull being 38X/37X. Here is a graph of the pull when I was having some oil issues, since then I tried my best to fix them, but I still think I'm getting some (what do you expect with 107.5k miles) I gained a little bit of power, but the curve still looked pretty similar. It's kind of small but it's the red line. The blue one is with my old 231/237 cam. I'm much happier with the really low-end power like <2000k rpms. It's quite a bit more torquey. It opens up around 2500 instead of the 3000 with the 231/237, which is what I was really wanting. I saw dapsuprslow's cam (the same specs as mine) and saw that it made 405/406 and thought hey make more power and better driveability. However, I didn't know he was running open headers with extensions. I'd prolly be up somewhere around there with the open headers. So not to shabby considering the miles. EXCEPT that my heads have some type of port work done to them. I don't know how good it is but they are 806 castings so they still aren't going to flow great. But, anyhow I'm good. More power means breaking more stuff, which I don't have the money for.

I'm surprised at how close the power curves are until the bigger cam starts to walk away at higher rpms. What you can't see is how the smaller cam performs at lower rpms, and how it feels at part-throttle - where the driveability is bound to be more satisfying.

Not a totally fair comparison. A 231/237 112 has 10* overlap at .05 (and more lift probably); the 224/224 110 has 4*. An interesting comparison would be be to increase the exhaust on your cam from 224* to 230* or try a 226/230 109 105. The fact that you held your own to 5000 rpm shows the cam did well.
