Default big cams & P/V clearance @ 63cc

OK im getting stupid again because im thinking about changing cams............

What is the largest cam I can go with without worrying about my valves tagging my pistons.

Ill be having my AFR 205s with 63cc and the GM MSL .051 gasket installed (quenched ) installed in the spring.

whats safe cam size without cutting the pistons ?

I could guess but it wont be extreemly accurate.
I would say a low 230 duration cam. There is a lot that will depend on the way the cam is ground. Just a 23x/23x number wont be that accurate.
Maybe the F13????

Phil here is a quote from Allan at Futral and a link to the post (#32)...

It looks like you can get away with a F13 (112lsa +4) and have .086"\.167" clearence. BTW I had this exact same setup and it was a stump puller for TQ!!! The only reason I fly-cut my pistons was I am using .045 Cometics and my intake clearence was less than .077".

I have been all over this subject, let me know if I can help. Getting ready to install my 4th cam in 14 months...

Thanks side,

Maybe Ill just give up a couple horses, and save a couple bucks and leave the TR224 in and see what kind of numbers I end up with after the AFRs are bolted on. My CC should be between the 62.5 and 63cc. I had .020 taken off and Ill be using the stock GM gasket.

I knew I could have bigger, but if I keep my baby cam maybe Ill have less to worry about in the long run

Im doing the opposite phil. im going from a fm14 with flycuts to an fm6. so ill have plenty of room but with the flycuts ill have a little less compression. by the way that is my favorite color vette-magnetic red id keep the cam you have and see what the HP is, then decide

you wont have the clearance problem for sure with the 224.

I've got Absolute Speed 64cc heads that were set up for a TR224. I decided to go with a Comp XER 224/228 .588/.591. Wouldn't fit I only had .045 clearance on the intakes, had to notch. A friend of mine had AFR 61cc heads, which is a .020 mill, and AFR reccommended a Comp XER 224/228 .581/.588 and that cam fit no problem. You could probably go a little bigger since your heads are not milled.

His heads are milled, .020. Also, 61cc chambers on AFRs are a mill of approx. .030. 62cc chambers are.024. I had mine cc'd, and they are right on the money...

You're right my friends AFR's were milled .024" the first time for I believe 61.5 cc. He had them milled by AFR again recently to .034" at 59cc. We put a Comp XER cam in that was a little bigger than the Trex and we had to notch I'm pretty sure .100 on the intake.

Why is the exhaust at risk on an over-rev/valve float and not the intake, being that the exhaust has a ton more clearance and the intake is the heavier valve?
