I'm not allowed to give a price without being a sponsor on this site. The block is made by LSM Systems Engineering in Waterford, MI. Going to a billet block isn't really justified unless you're making over 1000hp so it's pretty much only for the racers out there(although it could be polished and go into a very expensive show car I suppose) The main reason we made it is because the corvette C5R block starts distorting pretty badly around 850hp. Above that, it's a race to seal combustion pressure as cylinder distortion gets worse, but then the blocks themselves start letting go around 1600hp. The engine builders out there weld on extra cylinder head bosses, fill the block, get creative with the sleeves to try and seal up the motor but they are limited by the lightweight thinwall casting. I've seen a switch to a billet block make several hundred more horsepower with no other changes because of the greater rigidity of the block. Though it costs more than a C5R block, it makes more power and will live for more than a few passes. With the C5R at $5500 a pop, and having to buy several a season, compared to a billet that will last the whole season and more, while making more power, the extra cost can be justifed.

Our blocks are not made from 6061. They are a special billet with a higher ultimate strength that can also be parent metal plated with nikasil. 6061 cannot be plated as it has a tendency to flake off when run.

You might want to look up LSM... they do pretty mean cam stuff and billet blocks for a lot of things. I think they did a billet STEEL Cat block for tractor pullers. You don't wanna ask how much.

We originally started making custom camshafts for the racing community and our cams have been in everything from Pro Stock to IRL to American Lemans. All of our cams are ground on CNC masterless grinders so we can custom grind one-offs rather quickly without having to make a new master every time.

Our first billet block was a B-series Cummins diesel block made from 43 rockwell 4140 billet steel. Machining material that hard was challenging to say the least, but we got it done in time to display at PRI last year. The customer was using it for a tractor pull application so weight was not a factor. With the thinnest section in the entire block at .400", it was as thick as some armor plating on military vehicles, so you could say it literally was bullet-proof. Race Engine Technology magazine ended up doing a short write-up on it titled "The World's Strongest Engine Block"

I haven't seen the article yet but I did see the block in person and was impressed!

What issue of Race Engine Tech is it?

i have a "billet" block, as do most of the people on this forum

bil·let2
n.

1. A short, thick piece of wood, especially one used as firewood.
2. One of a series of regularly spaced, log-shaped segments used horizontally as ornamentation in the moldings of Norman architecture.
3.
1. A small, usually rectangular bar of iron or steel in an intermediate stage of manufacture.
2. A small ingot of nonferrous metal.
4.
1. The part of a harness strap that passes through a buckle.
2. A loop or pocket for securing the end of a buckled harness strap.

anything that is cast and is one piece such as ls1 etc blocks can be called billet

I've been searching for the issue in the office here but no luck so far. It's either going to be the January, Feb, or March of 2006 issues. When it turns up, I'll post the exact month.
