Milled heads + thicker head gaskets = safe P/V?
Just thinking if this would sound about right. If I were to use a 5.3 head milled .015 with 2.02 valves and a head gasket by say MLS could I be safe with a .600 lift cam on a stock bottom end?
I have noticed that most of the aftermarket gaskets are .040 - .045 thick such as Fel-Pro and Cometic which seem to be the most widely used. MLS gaskets for the LS1 have a measured thickness of .054. If I'm thinking this correctly that should make up for the extra milling and allow for more P/V along with knocking C/R points down a few to where the tune won't have to be exactly perfect.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong since I'm only confusing myself putting too much thought into this.

I don't like the idea of using a thick head gasket. You want the quench as tight as possible. The difference in compression between a .054 and a .045 gasket will be minimal. It is not difficult to tune an 11-1 car or even 11.5-1 car. It depends more on cam choice and tuning skills. Running a .600 lift cam with a lot of duration could be dangerous. Maybe go down to .590 lift. You should really ask the vendor who made the heads about whether your cam is right for the application.

I knew I was putting too much thought into it. Never thought about the quench area. The cam is a TSP 231/237. I can get the tune, only problem is I have to drive at least 2 hours to the closest one who can do it. What kind of problems would I have or would it even be feasible to run it that far without a tune?

And yeah you should be able to drive that with no problems. Some people would say no, but you have to see your options. It probably won't matter too much if you are on the highway and have cruise control. Are you M6 or A4? that could make a big difference as well.

I have Patriot 5.3 heads that have been completely redone. Reported, port matched intake & exhaust, 2.05 & 1.60 valves and shaved 0.010 with 0.004 thinner gasket. I have the 7.35 push rods, Lanati 224/560 112LSA cam with 1.75 rockers which raises my lift to 576. I barely have enough clearance. My P/V was like 0.078. To get a 600 lift cam you probably will need to notch the pistons.
Good luck,
Al
