Default How do you like your hot cam?

I'm in the market for a new cam. I have done alot of research and have come up with the final 2, tr 224/112 cam and gm's ls1 hot cam. i know the tr 224 cam makes alot more power and is said that it idles better. the benefit i see with the hot cam is the less aggressive ramp rate (which is what makes the 224 cam so good) how aggressive is the 224 cam on the valvetrain? i guess it is better put, how do you like your hot cam Idle/low, mid, top end power? thank you

2001 camaro ss, jet hot long tubes, ory pipe, ported throttle body, ailrlid

There's tons of Hotcam haters out there.I have one in my car and sometimes wish I would've got a different cam.The power is good for a small cam.It has a very nice flat tourque curve.I thought the same as alot of other people.Less aggressive, easy on the springs, nice lope.If cash isnt an issue,I would suggest to go with a diifferent proven cam and try to get a package deal.So you'll have everything you need.Thats why I sometimes regret it,because cash wasnt the issue. There wasnt alot of proven cams back in the day when I did mine.So the HC seemed good to me.

You dont state if your an auto or m6.I have an auto and had it tuned on a dyno,so its is pretty dead on.With only the typical cam surge.I think its alot easier on a M6 with no tune. Not sure if your planning a tune, but I wouldnt do an auto without one. There's lots of guys with out tunes and most say they are happy.I couldnt live without the tune.

I'm currently redoing my set up with PP heads and the Crane 1.8 rockers.I mainly went with the 1.8's because I dont want to pull out the cam and to take advantage of the higher lift springs on the new heads.

Bottom line just do alot of research.Weed thru all of the internet BS and do what you think is best for you.Becareful when looking at dynographs esp on the web.Eventually you'll recognize the BS and come to your own conclusions.Sorry for the long winded post,I usually try to steer people from the Hotcam if possible. If your dead set on it,witch I see you listed the 224 as well, like I said earlier research-research-research.A cam for your car is a big investment.

Best of luck with whatever route you go!

Why do you see that as a benefit?

The more aggressive rates of the TR224 will give better power under the curve than an otherwise identical cam with slower rates. The lobes used by a TR224 are not unecessarily harsh and you should get a fair number of miles out of Comp 918's.

The benefit of the lower ramp rates is the ability to go virtually indefinately without swapping springs when you run a hotcam and LS6 springs.

From reading numerous dyno results and threads on this web site, I don't see where the TR224 is making a lot more power than the GM LS1 hot cam.

Me neither.

One of the sponsors said once that with all the bolt ons they hit 400hp with a Hotcam.

I have done many hot cams and have got 380rwhp to 405rwhp (M6) but best of all good TQ #'s down low in the RPM's, just get a good tune on it... (with a little GAS over 500rwhp)

I had the Hotcam. I hated it, until I got it tuned. I have since gone bigger.

when i had a hotcam, i made 365 rwhp, with a stock LS1 intake, stock unported throttle body through an A4. a friend of mine put down 375 with an M6. both on stock unported heads. he went 12.0 @ 116mph in the quarter with a 3.42 gear, nittos, air lid, pacesetter headers, y-pipe, and cutout. he had alot of room for improvement in his car. plus he is the worst granny shifter in the world...

All else being equal a TR224 will make more power than Hotcam. Maybe not a lot more, but it will make more.

Plus, in my opinions at least, the TR224 will respond better to heads down the road. It will yeild better results then a Hotcam.

Like the others said, you need to look past numbers, they really don't mean as much as you think. It's how the power is applied that matters. blkZ28spt knows what he's talking about. It's whats under the curve that's important.
