The LS1 or Forged Motor
Ok I currently have a all bolt on 2002 Trans Am for the street. I'm eventually going to pick up either a used V6 Camaro and Drop a Forged motor in it or I'm going to buy a LS1 Camaro. My plan is to run naturally aspirated, I really don't care for Nitrous or forced induction. Something about naturally aspirated that I like. I'd like to run 10s or high 9s maybe...I'm really not looking for a full blown dragster, just something that can really move.
I'm not familiar with how much beating the LS1 can take... I see that MTI has a 427 stroker motor and Katech also... Are these packages worth it or would I be better off getting a forged motor. I would rather go with the stock LS1 and do a nice head and cam package or maybe get it stroked out, But really, do they hold up good down the road(future)? I don't want to put a money into an engine that doesn't last that long when I could of went with something like LME offers...
And I know you guys are saying, I'll prolly want to slap a supercharger on it or some nitrous, I'm not like that. I know when to stop!!! There's nothing wrong with forced induction, I just don't want the big headache. Naturally aspirated is safer route.
What do you guys think???

The block is BY FAR not your limiting factor... there are guys running 1000hp on aluminum blocks.
Heck, even the stock LS1 crank can handle 900hp or so
What you need to worry about are the stock rods and stock pistons. If you just get new rods and pistons your engine will be able to handle quite a bit of power before you should begin to worry.
I'd just buy and LS1 camaro, pull the motor, buy 402 shortblock from one of the sponsors, get some great heads (AFR or ET), get a cam, fast intake, and supporting mods and you shoudl be pushing 500rwhp NA.
If you decide to go FI, then choose a different cam and boost it, this will easily get you 600+rwhp. Just be sure to get all the supporting mods because that is where the costs can add up!
402 ~ $4000
Heads ~ $2500
Fast90/90 ~ $1000

You could run a high 9 N/A with a stock bottom end + rod bolts, with a strong cam/heads/bolt-on package. I'm suprised you wouldn't already know this by your post count. These aluminum block have taken some serious abuse without any ill effects. Just ask Harlan. Well over 1000hp with stock block and crank.

This is a money question really. You can pick up a v6 model for cheap these days and do a longblock to make it scream. An ls1 will be more money and then you'll still need to spend more to hit your 9's. You'll need a new rear and pro'lly tranny with either so my vote is the cheap v6 car and have a forged solid roller built.
