Default Any downside to a ported oil pump

Im am doing a cam swap in a few weeks, but i still need to get a timing chain and an oil pump. Im on a budget, but i dont want to be cheap. Should i go with an LS6 stock oil pump, or go ported. I had another friend with a cammed LS1 that spun a bearing this week, i just want to make sure i get a good oil pump on mine.

Ported?
stock LS6?

Thanks.

i have a stock one in mine as a friend of mine has a ported and the psi's are just way to low for my taste (15-20 at idle). can we flow to much fluid (like a BBC) and actually remove all the oil from the pan? that was the other reason why i left the stocker in there.

what year was your friends ls1? a 98?

2000, as was another friends 2000 that spun a bearing, mine is also a 2000. Their cars were both over 90,000 miles. Mine is at 59,000 right now. WHile i have it apart, i figured i might as well throw one in though.

A ported oil pump shouldnt loose PSI..... there is somthing wrong with your buddies pump/engine.

If anything, a ported pump will allow better flow and create more pressure (but generally its insigificant)

hmmmmm, did not know that.

question still stands, can we actually flow to much fluid (like a BBC) and drain the pan?

if we can't, then i need to start looking at a ported pump!

Im not knowlegeable at all about this but a ported ls6 pump seems to be the way to go. You can buy them ported and shimmed which also brings up the pressure.

Dont worry about flowing too much oil.. its a positive displacement pump that is designed for the LS1 engine. Which means you cant flow much more or much less oil than what the pump was designed for. All porting does is make the oil flow smoothly into and out of the pump.

If your pump cant produce stock pressure, then the porting job was not good because it allowed large leak paths. You must ensure the pump is sealed well, this goes for ANY pump though.

It is possible, although rare, and usually due to high G cornering. The chambers in the vette oil pan combat this. Many racers will fil their engine with an extra quart to keep the oil pump from starving diring sustained high G maneuvers. This however is not common, and Ive never heard of someone toasting their LS1 because of this. In short: Get the ported pump.

Yeah I bought a ported LS6 from thunder racing, I would at least buy an ls6 oil pump because the LS1 doenst seem, to hold up too well.

regardless, the part numbers will cross over to an ls6 pump. You cant buy the 98 style anymore.
