Stock piston thickness? How much can I flycut
I am in the process of flycutting my pistons for a comp 234/242 591/601 with 5.3's that are milled .050".
How much can I safely flycut? How thick is the piston at the top?
With my stock heads on there for mesuring purposes, the exhaust valve is hitting the piston just before the exhaust valve gets closed. Does this sound right?
And thats with the stock head not the 5.3 thats milled .050".

I was just told by a sponser that the piston is around .360" thick and I could possibly go as much as .150" and be OK. Can anyone else vouch with what they have seen?

I'm thinking I will have to cut about .130" to get good clearance. Sounds scary I know. I'm hoping for around 11.3 to 1 comp. The cam is a comp 234/242 591/601 114 lsa. I'm hoping for 450 rwhp.

Wanting to know how far I can flycut a stock piston?
I have a set of 5.3's from TEA that are milled .050" and a cam that is 234/242 591/601 114lsa.
I put the stock head on it with check springs and stock gasket and began to mesure it. Well the exhaust valve was hitting just a little bit before it got closed. It looks like I'm going to have to cut alot off.
I need some imput on how far I can go. I was told people have gone as far as .170" and had big shots sprayed at it. And it last two years before a rod went out.
It looks like I may have to go as far as .150". Thats sounds scary to me. But but if others have gone farther and held up well, then I'm all for it.
This is a stock 2000 ss motor with 45K on the clock.
I need more advice. Thanks.

Reviving older thread.
Any reslults ? Anybody positively know how thick the stock piston is ? .360" seems real thick to me. I plan on running a real large cam (track only & n/a). 260+ duration.
Thanks !
