Default TR224 without tune??

Hello, just want to say that this forum is on of the best on the internet for core technical knowledge.... Anyway, I have an 04 GTO with CAI, P&P TB, JBA shortie headers and the stock tune and runs very strong. However in a couple of weeks I was planning on installing a cam on my vacation at my parent's house. Unfortunately there is no tuner avaliable in that area and a dyno tune will have to wait until I get back to my home which is about 400 miles away. So, I was thinking I would do a TR224 on a 114LSA for great all-around performance. Will it will be safe for the engine (specifically running in a very lean state) to drive up to 500 miles on the stock tune?? If you guys think this cam is too large to drive safely that far without a tune could you suggest an alternative?? Thanks a lot in advance.

Is your can a manula or auto?

Either way it will be fine for the trip. You'll eventually want a tune if it's an auto to make drivability a little better.

I ran a TR224-114 and a Futral 224-112 in an auto car with no tune for over a year and never had any problems. I adjusted the TB a little but it never stalled or surged.

You'll want a tune auto or manual. I've had that cam in a M6 and it didn't like the stock tune at all. It drove and would get you from point a to point b, but it won't idle well and you need to be careful when driving it w/o a tune.

500 miles would be ok on the engine.

I put in a TR224 and it drove the same as it did with the stock cam. It had some surging every now and then, but nothing serious at all.

I dont know about a GTO tune, but on my car it struggled at idle with A/C off and would not stay on with the A/C, I would imagine drivability would be worst in an auto. Power wise it felt like stock without the tune. It will be ok to drive it home. Can you do without A/C? lol

id say rule of thumb is at least a mail order tune or use a bin file to at least get it to where it should be.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like there have been a range of experiences running the tr224 without a tune, but no one has experienced any engine damage. By the way it's an M6 which should help..

I've got the TR224 LSA 112 without a tune on an 04 GTO M6. Its scheduled for a tune next week but I've driven it a few times untuned. Its not easy, you need three feet for the pedals sometimes. I've found she likes to stall when its damn out (after rain). As for damage you can destroy your O2's and cats if you go too rich for too long but the engine itself should be ok.
