Ran without water for about 10 minutes, now tapping.
This is for my buddy, who needs some second opinions. The car is 88 Mustang. The motor is a 5.0 block that has a stroker eagle crank, ross pistons, and we dont know much about everything else. He got in a car accident that smashed his radiator, and he drove it for about 10 minutes afterwards on the highway. Most if not all of the water emptied out. There was a very strong odor afterwards that smelled like something burned. The oil looked like crap afterwards. He changed the oil and filter, and it has this loud tapping sound. Any ideas on what could be wrong. Some people have been telling him its only the lifters, but others are saying if it was ran without water for 10 minutes there could be much more harm than just the lifters. Any advice on what to do?
I was thinking to just pull the heads and inspect the lifters, then go from there?thanks

no water = A LOT OF HEAT.
a lot of heat in an engine could be many different things:
thin oil = f'd lifters, bearings, warped head(s), burnt valves, burnt pistons, etc.
i'd guess if the oil looked that bad...i'd start with the lifters and work my way to the crank and rod bearings..

Uhhh....hit and run, perhaps?
