Default Doing the H/C thing and....

I can't lift the steering rack up high enough to clear the tabs on the cross member (98 C5)

The rubber boot on the rack hits the bottom of the frame.

Any body got any tips/hints???

Keep in mind I am by myself so my options are pretty limited....I don't want to get the wife involved.Things could get ugly.

Thanks

Mark

You have to twist and turn the rack to get it out...all I remember is that it was a PITA. Get your prybar out and pry between the front frame and subframe to get it to drop more...it takes some prying but it comes.....I would advise some help...call a friend over or sumthing. Good luck!

Slide the rack toward the pass side to clear the tabs, then you can rotate it. I say slide, but the rubber grommets don't want to slide through the tabs easily either. WD40, a pry bar or light tapping with a small hammer might be necessary. I just did one last week and I feel your pain. Be sure and lube the grommets well with WD40 when reinstalling too.

I tried sliding it sideways and it wont budge......I'll try lubing it and see if she goes.

Keep 'em coming.

go on the driver side put like a pipe or use a racthet. place it on the tab of the rack and knock it out of the frame tabs. i loosend the bracket that holds abs box to get more room to play with but don't bend the lines.

On the '98 C5 it's located in the rear so it's not really an issue for me.

I'm gonna take a break and watch some of the Bristol race.

I really don't want to break those tabs off the cradle....That would really suck!!

BTW 2xLS1 Can I have some info on your pulley install tool?

Sorry, I've only done a 99 and a couple of 04 Vettes. You do have the steering shaft disconnected, right? Sent you a PM about the tool.

I did have the steering shaft disconnected...

I used the WD-40 method and it really helped to free it up enough for me to remove it.

Thanks again for your help

I went to undo my balancer bolt and to my suprise it took NO effort to break it loose!!!!

If I hadn't undertaken this project it would have definately spun off and took out my steering rack

Had enough for today.....Back @ It tomorrow.

I'm sure I will have some more questions/problems, it's my first H/C.

Hope your around when I do!!!

I had to gently pry mine out of the tabs as well. I used a big pry bar/screwdriver to losen it up then pushed the rack to the drivers side. LUBE really helps! I had to pull and install that MF twice too, because I pinched the dreaded oil pump o-ring the first time.

This is funny because I just got mine out last night and posted up pictures in the Corvette section. It's a PITA for sure. Now if the stupid pulley wouldn't be such a bitch I could finish the project up.

Good luck!

There's a Corvette section????

I am usually on the corvette forum but since deciding to do H/C I have found way more info over here.

I got my heads off yesterday and noticed in the rear most cyl.(#7,#8) there was some thin flaky carbon along with the usual hard deposits.

It disintegrates when I touched it but I am wondering if this is normal.
The exhaust ports looked fine and were'nt oily.

BTW the shop vac trick worked perfectly...only saw a tiny bit of coolant and none went in the bolt holes!!
