The Helicoil is steel which is harder than the aluminum block. You'll be perfectly ok. I know a guy that used one on his 99 SS after he stripped a head bolt out. Still going as far as I know.

Where did you find your helicoil kit at? Was the price pretty reasonable for the kit?

Thanks, just wondering where to look.

You can get them at pretty much any auto parts store. Napa has them as well as your Pep Boys ect ect. They might be known by a different name in the other stores. I think Napa actually carries the Helicoil brandname. If I remember correctly being it's been awhile since I had to buy any they are alittle expensive I think for what they are($20 give or take depending) but still it beats having to throw a block out.

I know this is an old thread, but I ran into a similar issue with the bolt that holds the plastic lifter tray in the block.

The torque wrench I used wasn't dailed in/calibrated correctly and stripped the block threads. (the bolt had a coil of aluminum around it's threads). Needless to say the bolt will thread down to the point of "almost" tightening, then it'll spin and repeat the same process.

My buddy said I could just use a little JB WELD on the threads of the bolt to keep it in place since its only requires 8ft/lbs of torque.

So should I buy the HELICOIL 6 x 1.0 repair kit or JB WELD it?

Please give me your input.

Thanks in advance.

Fix it correctly and use a helicoil. Just make sure you don't get any chips in the lifter bores or oil gallery.
