Default Stock Timing Chain on Head Cam Package bad?

Hey guys, I saw a recent post about a guy with a 98 Vette have his timing chain snap and pistons slam into the valves

I just did a h/c swap, numbers in sig, but East Side Performance said if I'm lookin to save a few bucks, not to worry much about the timing chain.
Should I be very concerned that I still have the stocker? Does the 02 have the LS6 chain?

Thanks

if your eally worried about it get an LS2 chain for about $25. But unless you rag the ever living **** out of your car or you have alot of miles i wouldn't worry about it.

Shrugs. I went ahead and ordered the ls2 chain set from TSP and got the ported ls2/6 oil pump as well. Those were two of the biggest problem areas, other than the 10 bolt, that I had read up on.

200 now, saves 2000 later

Thanks for the replies. I called up East Side and expressed my slight anxiety over the issue, and he assured me that the majority of the horror stories with timing chains usually involve poor installation, and that they've had cars go 800rwhp + on stock chains.

I don't beat the **** out of the car, but I certainly drive it like its meant to be driven. What i'll do is when it goes in for a clutch, I'll order a double-rollmaster and pay for the installation just so I never have to think about it again.

What he said...

BTW, SUX2BU - 2895 lbs! Sounds like you did a lot more un-bolting than bolting on...

What's left to take off??? If I ever race you, I'm going to have to talk you into taking 3 fat guys for the ride

Broken timing chains are few and far between. And whats more, Ive heard more stories about broken double rollers than Ive heard issues with stock chains. I upgraded to the ls2 timing chain, but unless you find yourself back inside the motor, you probably odnt have to bother.

Thats a very settling comment lol. I appreciate all your comments. I'll do some searching on the double rollmaster problems too.

I went with the JWIS while it was apart, but that being said, the 02 timing chain for the LS1 and LS6 are the same part number (this is the original part number, not the superceded one that exists now).

I'm still running the stock 02 TC here. The motor has had a cam since 4K miles and it now sits at 30K with no problems. The next time i'm in that area though i'm gonna throw on an LS2 chain for peace of mind.

Is the LS2 chain that much beefier than the LS1? For $25, I certainly wouldn't mind buying one. However, if there's better to be had for a bit more cash, I'd be willing to take the plunge.

Definately do the ls2. Unless youre going huge on the cam and springs, not much reason to spend any more money.

Thanks, guys (err, guy and gal). You rule.

Tony, my education thread is back up to the top. Take a look when you get a chance (and ignore the fact that I repeated this question in my list).

My stock Ls6 chain let go after about 20,000 miles with Isky springs and a comp XER cam. It had a total of about 45,000 total miles. Bent ten valves.... I upgraded to a rollmaster single, when I installed my new TSP PRC Ls6 heads. Pistons just had small nicks. PS this occurred at 6000+ Rpms. After my experience Id defintely change the stocker.

If its already buttoned up I honestly wouldnt worry about it, my former camaro went over 114,000 miles with about 60,000 running 918 springs and a comp XE cam.

I think its possible broken chains could actually be a byproduct of valve float and light piston to valve contact.
