Default cam guys, i need help

ok, i will be doing a 6.0l aluminum headed truck motor build up for my s-10, i need to know how big of a cam i can go with? the motor is almost brand new (5 miles on it) with a 4l80e trans, the stall converter will be a 4000, i have a ford 9" with 3.55 gears, ill be doing long tube headers, an ls6 intake, and a cpu reprogram, and I want to get the most hp out of it, mind you the truck is only an x-treme version so its about 3200lbs with me in it, what can i do? i plan to keep the valve springs and whatnot as stock as possible FOR NOW

You cant get to radical without getting dual springs, and you will not want to run any mild cam on stock springs for any amount of time really.

I would go with a TSP cam kit or one from Thunder racing before going with the SLP one. It is a pretty aggressive profile though.

Dude, dont be a baby! If you want a faster truck you are gonna eat a little fuel, but the gains are awesome. My suggestion is to try to do the cam and heads at once or do the heads first. The reason is Ijust did a cam swap on my ls1 engine andit idles funny because I havent got it tuned. You're in AUG and my advise would be to save money for a tune right after you put the cam in. I trust the guys at Carolina Automasters, Jeff, the best and I have seen so cool stuff that he can do with tuning. I think its worth it. Just realize with all the power you'll gain its ok to lose 30 miles to a tank. I lost 40 but I can run a cobra. So its all in what you want

lol im out in PA..... and its not for the gas mileage, it has to do with parents, yea, its the age thing, yea we race every weekend, and NO i dont drive like most 17 year olds, ive seen the way they drive and what happens, and i understand that steriotype that is giving due to this, and i accept it, im not as experienced as my parents or more mature drivers, and i understand their concern, so thats why i cant really do anything too wicked just yet for the road, as far as what you said, the heads just dont fit, im not trying to make a 9 second pass just yet, ill be content if i even can hit mid 13's when im done

what kind of lift are we talking? what about price range? do you think with this cam/head combo, long tube headers (custom from a set of hooker) and a 4000 stall converter with the right program, that i could run mid 13's in a 3200lb truck?

EDIT: I cant find any tsp cams anywhere? sponsor of the sight? i have heard of them and such but never saw a site

Get the kit and install it yourself. It is a fun/satisfying day when you complete your first cam swap!

I agree with orangeapeel, go with a good sized cam, say maybe their 231/237, with around .600 lift or so and a 112 or 114 lsa. Def gonna need the dual valve springs, hardened pushrods, etc so just go with one of their packages. You will need a tune though so id suggest finding a local place first to do a full dynotune before installing the cam, otherwise its going to drive awful. If there isnt a local place there are sponsors on this board that can do a mail-order tune for you if you send them your pcm and a list of your mods. With a good sized cam, you should be close to 400 rwhp and with the mods you have listed and some sticky tires forget 13's, youd be looking at 12's easily, esecially since the ruck only weighs 3200 pounds with you in it. There are cam only guys with no weight reducition in their f-bodys running 11's and even 10's and their cars weigh around 3400-3500 pounds.

ok this might be the wrong thread and not sure if i asked about it yet or not, how much of a dimension difference is the 4l60e to the 4l80e?

EDIT: as for the cam, i still dont see anything on their site? it doesnt list any cams without cylinder heads, and what kind of a cam should I go with? whats the price range? if im looking at TSP that is

Thats the link to the 99-04 truck engines, which I think is what you need since it is a 6.0 liter truck engine. You have to go to engine and valvetrain, then click on valvetrain and not cam and head packages, then under valvetrain you will see camshafts and camshaft packages. Id say go with a 231/237, maybe the 235/240, but any bigger and your going to have to change you valvesprings sooner. With either of those camshafts though you will be making real good power, and should be enough to push your truck deep into the 12's in my opinion.

You could run 918's as ive seen people run them on cams at alomst .600 lift, but I wouldnt do it. Def dont want a valvespring to break in your new engine. For the extra $100 or so id just go with the dual valve springs. If you dotn want the ones from tsp you can even just order the cam from them and then get the valvetrain components elsewhere as I know patriot makes real good dual valve springs for approx. $250 and they are good to .650 lift.

With an ms3 you would def be over 400 rwhp easily. You will have a good rear in there so some sticky tires and decent traction and i say easily deep into the 12's. Maybe 11's as you said your race weight would be around 3200 pounds with you in the car, but it will all depend on how well you can get your truck to hook because I have buddies with built lightnings and its real tough for them to hook up with no weight over the rear wheels. Sounds like your building one nice truck though!
