Default How important is motor oil?

I just recently did an oil change on my 01 SS. For the last year I've been using valvoline 5W-30 every 3000 miles, but just for my last oil change I bumped up to a 10W-30 thinking it might help for the summer months. However, the motor starting making a whining noise as soon as you start the car. At first though I had suspected the water pump, but ran the motor without the serpentine belts and to my disappointment the noise didn't go away. Now my fears are crank bearing or maybe the timing chain. Has anyone faced any of these problems. Thanks for any input.
