Default Car broke down, need some help please!!!

Well my roommate just bought his 98 SS about a month ago and it just broke down on him tonight. He is pretty much stock and this came out of no where.

Right after he starts the car it makes a loud scraping sound in the front and then it shoots some sparks from around the Underdrive Pulley and then the car just dies. Obviously i am thinking the UD pulley could be the culprit. But i wanna see if anybody else has had this happened and might know it to be something else.

sounds like the armature from the starter isnt disengaging?

So what would the fix be for that, replace the whole starter. Also the sparks are coming from right behind the UD pulley. Like right in between the pulley and the crank. How would the starter messing up cause these sparks.

If the sparks are coming right behind the pulley, this is not a good sign. The front cover is aluminum, so im not sure what would be sparking. Perhaps the timing chain? Anyway, get the car towed home and start pulling the front of the motor off till you find what happened. I hope its not as serious as it seems.

I am just hoping it isnt a crank problem, but if it is then i guess its a good time for a stroker.

Default noise

It could be something with the underdrive pully or it could be an A/C compressor clutch or tensioner. you need to start by narrowing down the source of the sparks and look for obvious rubbing marks, you might want to remove the drive belts one at a time and start the car and see if the problem goes away. Good luck.

Yeah it could very well be the AC compressor clutch. Take the AC belt off and see if it still does it. Start eliminating the problem with the easiest things first instead of diving in and tearing your motor apart. Let us know how it turns out.

Sounds like woever put the underdrive pulley on did not tighten it enough and it is now loose on the crank. That's really bad because if it is now sparking, then you have probably damaged the crank.

I dont like the sound of that. But if it is damaged then its a good excuse to do a stroker and give my roommate my motor.
