Default 228/232 and my goals

Over the winter I plan on going with a cam (with supporting boltons). This will predominantly be a street car, auto-x about 10 times each season, and maybe a few passes at the strip. I would like to keep my 3.42s and run 918 springs.

So I'm thinking I need a cam with some good torque down low (full weight car), so the TR224 112 sounds pretty strong, easily driven on the street and easy to tune. But after reading everyone says "go bigger", after thinking about it a 228/232 110+1 (109 ICL?) is starting to intrigue me. I've found some decent info on this cam and it sounds like a great balance.

If I go with the bigger cam am I going to have to flycut if I do heads further down the road? I'de either run AFR 205s or PRC 200cc Terminators, looking for a 8.2:1~ DCR (91 octane is common here).

To sum it up, would 3.42s be ok with the 228/232? would I need to flycut when I get heads? would it provide enough grunt down low for auto-x with a heavy car? Should I just stick with the proven TR224?

I'm not much for dyno numbers but it would be nice to see 385rwhp/375rwtq cam only and 425rwhp/400+rwtq H/C, maybe that's asking too much. Thanks for the help

I have been looking at a similar cam as well though more likely on a 111 +0 or 112 +1. I can tell you that you are going to need a big fat gasket if you want to run the Terminator heads and keep your DCR that low and not change pistons or something. For me with a .04 gasket and a 228/232 112 + 1 it comes in at ~8.68 DCR. A .045 gasket would give ~8.57 and a .056 gasket would give ~8.34.

As for Auto X I would think you would want nice close gears so a higher ratio rear end would be better. I won't be doing auto-x but I understand not wanting to change the rearend gears.

I'm sure some of the experts will be able to help more than me though.

How about TSP 224R-114+2 .581/.581 - gives 8.27DCR with
64cc head with good idle.

I've got a 227/231 with 3:42 gears in autox and it's a great combination. Since I shift at 6800, on some short courses I never leave 1st gear, others 2nd is fine with PLENTY of torque to get really sideways. I ran a TR224 112 for 3 years in autox; this has more grunt.
